Breast Lift

Breast lift procedure, also known as mastopexy, involves the reshaping of the sagging breasts. In this process, excess skin and breast tissue are removed, the breast is reshaped, and an upright appearance is obtained. In breast lift procedures, there is not a big change in breast size. Nonetheless, this procedure can be performed in combination with breast augmentation or breast reduction procedures. On the other hand, there is growth in the areola area. It is possible to give a new look to the areola with the breast lift procedure. A younger and symmetrical appearance is obtained with breast lift. Sagging occurs in the breasts due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes, aging, gravity and genetic predisposition. These effects are prevented with the lifting procedure.

What is Breast Lift Surgery? How Is It Performed?

Breast lift surgery is performed with incisions made in different ways. These incisions are made around the areola, in the form of a straight line up to the chest fold with the areola, or in a reverse T shape to the right and left after descending to the chest fold around the areola. The condition and shape of the breasts, the size of the areola, the amount of sagging, skin quality and flexibility are taken into consideration in this process. In the procedure performed under general anesthesia, the breast tissue is removed and reshaped by intervention through the incision. The nipple and areola can also be repositioned. Since the skin loses its elasticity, excess skin is removed in order to regain an upright appearance. Finally, the incisions are stitched and the procedure is completed.

Who Can Have Breast Lift Surgery?

Breast lift surgery can be performed on all individuals, who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their breasts, and who have suitable general medical conditions. In order for this procedure to be performed, first of all, breast development must have been completed. If the nipple looks towards the ground instead of facing the front, there is sagging in the breasts. Sagging does not occur in the same way in both breasts. Therefore, there is distortion and asymmetry in the appearance. Breast lift surgery can be performed to achieve the same appearance on both breasts. Breast lift surgery is not very suitable for individuals, plan for pregnancy in the future. This is due to the fact that sagging occurs again after pregnancy and breastfeeding. For this reason, it is an ideal procedure for individuals, who do not intend to have children in the future.

Planning Process Before Breast Lift Surgery

The first stage of the planning process involves the examination of the current medical condition and medical history of the patient. Individuals, who have had breast cancer before in their family, should definitely inform about this medical history. Considering the condition of the breasts, the techniques to be used in the procedure and the desired appearance to be obtained after the procedure should be determined in the planning process. Mammogram may be performed in some patients. Patients should stop smoking and avoid alcohol consumption a while before the procedure as it slows down the blood flow in the skin, and prolongs the recovery process. In addition, the use of aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs or herbal supplements that increase the risk of bleeding should be discontinued. It is extremely important to understand the entire process of breast lift surgery. It is extremely natural to feel excitement or anxiety before the procedure. In order to overcome these feelings, the patients should ask all the points they are curious about.

Recovery Process After Breast Lift Surgery

After the procedure, the breast area is dressed with a bandage. In addition, drains can be placed in the incision areas in some cases, in order to remove the accumulated fluid or blood. After a while, these drains are removed by the physician. Swelling or tingling sensation is extremely normal for two weeks following the procedure. Patients should lie on their back for a while, avoiding to turn not to the right or left. The stitches dissolve by themselves; however, the stitches can be removed by the physician in some cases. Patients are required to wear a soft support bra for approximately 3 - 4 weeks. The change is immediately noticeable; however, it may take approximately 1 month to see the final result.
